"To glorify God through worship and fellowship, to tell of God's grace to humankind revealed through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Christ, and to respond to God's care for the world by serving others."

About the Steeple

Did you know that as townships were being founded and buildings were erected, that Church Steeples were built towering above all other buildings so that the townsfolk and new settlers would always know where to go to find their new Church Home? The steeple on First Church is the tallest structure in downtown Bloomsburg. Our steeple and the cross atop have been pointing the way "home" for generations of Christians, believers and sinners alike since 1891. Did you know our steeple is also the home to our church bell that is rung manually twice each Sunday to announce the worship of our Lord and Savior; and on special occasions (like the days following 9/11/01), to remind the residents of God's presence in their community?

I can only imagine the many special times our bell has rung out through the crisp clean air of Bloomsburg; and the reassurance it has provided many who were in a time of silent need. If you are one of our family who has not had the opportunity to ring the bell and feel the glory of announcing God's presence, then you are invited to the Church entry on Sunday morning to meet with the usher staff and ring our Church bell. Many Churches have gone to an electronic carillon system that is timed and operates via speaker systems. These bells are fine, but are obviously electronic and, of course, eliminates the ability to feel the power of the bell.

Our manual steeple bell is just one of the many elements and features of our Church Home that we at First Church are proud of. We are currently beginning the process of re-roofing the main sanctuary building, which will include repair of the slate on our steeple to keep directing the townsfolk of Bloomsburg "home" for many generations to come.
